Foreign Languages

Spanish I
As a beginning course for college-bound students, Spanish I seeks to develop fundamental skills in the four basic areas of language: speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. It includes an introduction to the culture of the Spanish-speaking world.

Spanish II
In Spanish II, students will review grammar and vocabulary learned in Spanish I. New grammar and vocabulary will be introduced through discussion of the following topics: school, clothes, sports and leisure activities, transportation and travel, historical and cultural figures, memories, and topics from other disciplines.

Students will also learn about the culture and traditions of several Spanish-speaking countries, as well as important Hispanic personalities of the past and the present. Students will gain a working knowledge of the present, past and future tenses of regular and irregular verbs, including reflexive verbs. They will learn how to give orders using the imperative mood and become familiar with the uses and forms of the subjunctive mood. Special emphasis will be placed on the speaking of the language and the writing of simple paragraphs. Prerequisite: Spanish I or placement.

Spanish III
Continuing the study of culture as well as the development of skills in all four areas of language, Spanish III seeks to prepare students for achievement tests use for advanced placement in college. Prerequisite : Spanish II or placement.

Spanish IV
This is a course that features high-interest topics, an effective and uniquely sequenced review of selected grammatical points, and a thorough integration of language and culture. Course objectives include increasing the level of proficiency in the five basic skills of the language: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture to the advanced level. It exposes students to the great literary works of authors of Spain, Latin America, and the United States fostering an appreciation in all literary forms and genres – poetry, prose, novel, short story, essay, fable and theater. Prerequisite: Spanish III or placement.

AP Spanish Language
AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Course content might best reflect intellectual interests shared by the students and teacher (the arts, history, current events, literature, culture, sports, etc.). The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities and disciplines rather than to the mastery of any specific subject matter. Prerequisite: Spanish II/III.

AP Spanish Literature
AP Spanish Literature covers selected works from the literatures of Spain and Spanish America. The function of the course is to prepare students to understand a lecture in Spanish and to participate actively in discussions on literary topics in Spanish. The student will learn to critically analyze the form and content of literary works orally and in writing using appropriate terminology. Prerequisite: AP Spanish Language.
