Advanced Placement

AP Art History
This year-long college course taught for advanced placement credit covers the entire western world of Art History from pre-history to the 21st Century. Knowledge of art styles, artists, materials, cultures, religions and politics are examined in an attempt to understand the various cultures that have produced the art. Additionally, we study non-European cultures of the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Islam and Africa.

Along with daily articulation of the analysis of art pieces, writing is a large component of the course. A museum trip to Houston takes place very close to the national exam date as final preparation for the exam. The students are able to see, firsthand, art from all the units studied in addition to a Byzantine Chapel and the contemporary Rothko Chapel.

Pre-requisite: B in History with the recommendation of the History Teacher.

AP Biology
This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general biology course taken during the first year of college. This course seeks to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology and gain an appreciation of science. Through personal experience in scientific inquiry, students integrate major topics of biology and apply biological knowledge in laboratory sequences designed to prepare them for the Advanced Placement biology exam. Students enrolling in this course should see the instructor before school ends to get information for a summer lab experiment of their choice.

AP Spanish Language
AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing . Course content might best reflect intellectual interests shared by the students and teacher (the arts, history, current events, literature, culture, sports, etc .). The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to various activities and disciplines rather than to the mastery of any specific subject matter. Prerequisite : Spanish II/III.

AP Spanish Literature
AP Spanish Literature covers selected works from the literatures of Spain and Spanish America. The function of the course is to prepare students to understand a lecture in Spanish and to participate actively in discussions on literary topics in Spanish . The student will learn to analyze critically the form and content of literary works orally and in writing using appropriate terminology. Prerequisite: Spanish Language AP.

AP US History
The course provides a two-semester chronological survey of American History.  The course commences with the Columbian exchanges and concludes with the study of the complex issues of our day.  The student will explore the concepts that have made our nation great, such as the pertinent political, economic, social, and cultural themes of the American past.  We will read and analyze primary documents.  The students will be expected to master the writing of persuasive essays.
